Hamas turns Gaza streets into deadly maze for Israeli troops

The Israeli army's death toll in Gaza is almost twice as high as during a 2014 ground offensive, a reflection of the extent of its push into the enclave and Hamas' effective use of guerrilla tactics and an expanded arsenal. Hamas has used a large weapons stockpile, terrain knowledge, and a vast tunnel network to turn Gaza's streets into a deadly maze. Since Israel's ground attack began in late October, about 110 Israeli soldiers have been killed, with about a quarter being tank crew. The scope of the war is vastly different from 2014, when Israel operated no deeper than a kilometer inside Gaza. Hamas has posted videos on its Telegram channel showing fighters with bodycams weaving through buildings to launch rockets at armoured vehicles. Israel's military has said it has killed at least 7,000, with Hamas dismissing the Israeli figure, saying it includes civilians.
