India's top court rules special status of held Kashmir was a 'temporary provision'

India's Supreme Court has ruled that the special status of held Kashmir is temporary and upheld the order abrogating Article 370 in the constitution. The court also directed the election commission to hold elections in held Kashmir by September 30, 2024. The ruling revoked occupied Kashmir's special status in 2019, which allowed people from the rest of the country to acquire property and settle permanently in the region. The court ruled that occupied Kashmir did not retain sovereignty after joining India and did not need to adjudicate on the validity of the presidential proclamation in the region.
